The company founded by the Virgin Group property of Sir Richard Branson took the challenge to make possible the commercialization of private flights to space. Because of the advanced state of their project, they say that they are the first "spaceline" of the world.
Virgin Galactic will have his own fleet of sub-orbital spaceships. SpaceShipTwo, designed and developed from the historical SpaceShipOne winning SpaceShip of the AnsariX prize.
The development of SpaceShipTwo has been achieved through the joint effort of Virgin and Scaled Composites, based in the Mojave desert, California. Burt Rutan, founder of Scaled Composites, is considered a visionary and one of the most important designers of aircrafts an airframes of the last 50 years and is responsible for the design of the Sub Orbital SpaceShip.
To realize the suborbital flights, they will also rely on the WhiteNightTwo vehicle, responsible for the transportation of SSTwo carrying the pilots and passengers in it’s interior until they reach enough height to let go and switch on the rockets which will propel it into Space. Both designs and scale models have been presented to the public and main info channels in New York on January 23rd of 2008 (you may see a video in the home page).
The headquarters and base of operations will be the Spaceport that is being built in New Mexico. For the design and construction of this establishment, Virgin Galactic has been collaborating with the renowned arquitect Norman Foster.
According to the intentions declared by the company this will not be the only Spaceport or Galacticport, as they are searching and studying other possible places around the world that provide the necessary characteristics to operate. One of the possibilities is Kiruna airport in the north of Sweden.
The Space tourists that will take off from this place will add to their already fantastic adventure marvellous views of the majestic spectacle of the Northern Lights or "Aurora Borealis".
Virgin Galactic treats 2008 as their year of consolidation for the development of their spaceships. Due to the importance they give to security their project will be subjected to numerous tests and once proven they will start to operate.
